Call to restore rights

Rights activists yesterday called on military leaders to scrap commands that violate basic liberties.
About 20 academics and rights activists signed a petition demanding the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM) ease some prohibitions imposed since last week's coup. These included bans on political gatherings, the expression of political opinions, the broadcasting of SMS messages on television programmes and the airing of opinions on radio programmes. The activists asked the CDRM to allow community radio stations back on air and guarantee the National Human Rights Commission would exist both in the temporary charter and a permanent new constitution. They sought speedy drafting of a constitution and its implementation as soon as possible. They said there must be public participation in its drafting. "The power which derives from the depriving of human rights cannot be regarded as justified power. This group hopes the CDRM returns basic human rights and democracy to the people,'' their statement said.
