Military has until Oct 1'

A group supporting last Tuesday's coup has called on the military leadership to return the government to civilian hands by October 1.
The Popular Campaign for Democracy yesterday urged the junta to return power to the people and demanded a freeze of the assets of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The campaign called for public participation in rewriting the Constitution. The campaign's secretary-general Suriyasai Katasila - who is also a spokesman for the People's Alliance for Democracy - said while many disagreed with the coup they were happy it had toppled Thaksin Shinawatra. "Thaksin was wrong to stay on and lead the country into a political deadlock. It resulted in military action," he said. Suriyasai wanted to see at least a third of those drafting a new constitution from civic groups. The revoked 1997 Constitution should be a guide for the new charter. A new Constitution should be finished within eight months. He also warned those opposed to the intervention of the military not to be hijacked by pro-Thaksin groups as proxy fighters.
