Soldier in Yala killed

An explosion at a Raman district barracks in Yala yesterday killed one soldier, police said.

They suspected the soldier's hand grenade had detonated accidentally.

Sergeant Mavin Panyana died instantly in his barracks at Watchiraprakarn Buddhist temple. The explosion occurred at 7.45pm.

Bomb experts suggested the explosion was from an accidental detonation rather than an attack by militants given its location.

Meanwhile, the situation in the South remained tense.

As many as 1,700 people have died in the region since early 2004.
