TRT pair sue over 'malicious' reports

Two executives of the Thai Rak Thai Party yesterday filed a police complaint, charging two websites with libel stemming from reports that four party executives were involved in distributing leaflets attacking the military coup.

"The reports were false and malicious, to portray my colleagues and I as having gone underground," party executive Veera Musigapong said in the complaint.

Veera and his co-complainant Jatuporn Phromphan called on police to launch an investigation into reports posted on the two websites - www.manager.co.th and www.akeyuth.com.

The reports named the two and their colleagues, Phumtham Wechayachai and Kriengkamol Laohapairoj, alleging that they had attempted to organise an underground movement against the military takeover.

The www.manager.co.th website is linked to the Manager Group under media tycoon Sondhi Limthongkul, while www.akeyuth.com is operated by businessman Ekkayuth Anchanbutr.

Sondhi and Ekkayuth are critics of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Jatuporn said he suspected Sondhi and Ekkayuth of having an ulterior motive to encourage the military to dismantle his party.
