Ousted PM's brother in law resigns

Somchai Wongsawat, brotherinlaw of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, resigned as permanent secretary of labour on Friday.

Labour Deputy Permanent Secretary Surin Jirawisit confirmed yesterday that Somchai's resignation letter had been submitted to the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy.

"I didn't know beforehand he would decide to resign," said Surin.

Surin said Somchai did not sign any documents on his desk on Wednesday and had authorised three deputy permanent secretaries to take charge of all tasks.

Surin said he could not reach Somchai yesterday.

However, an informed source said Somchai said in his resignation letter he wanted to leave the civil service to go into business.
