Rail track blast and arson

A bomb blast near a railway track and arson at a school in the southernmost Narathiwat province yesterday maintained the daily spate of violence in the deep South after a series of huge explosions killed four people and injured dozens of others in Hat Yai on Saturday.
The rail bomb exploded at about 8.45 am in Narathiwat's Rusoh district, one kilometre from Rusoh railway station, police said. The explosion damaged the track but caused no casualties. Hours earlier at about midnight on Sunday, a canteen building in Ban Kasoh school in Narathiwat's Si Sakhon was set ablaze. Villagers took 10 minutes to extinguish the fire, which only slightly damaged the building, police said. Around the same time in the same district, a number of telephone boxes were set on fire. More than 1,700 people have died in the region since the eruption of violence in early 2004.
