Bangkok athletes stretch their lead

[NATIONAL GAMES] Reigning champions Bangkok passed their target of 87 gold medals after a winning 14 yesterday to extend their lead at the National Games in Suphan Buri.

Bangkok have won the overall title several times and set their sights on winning at least 87 gold medals this year.

A total of 50 gold medals were contested yesterday and Bangkok's swimmers, cyclists and shooters collected 14 of them to stretch their lead in the 12-day event.

Swimmers from Bangkok won five of the six gold medals contested in the pool yesterday. Suphawat Arunsrimorrakot won the men's 1,500m freestyle, Suriya Suksupak won the men's 100m backstroke and Natthanan Chankrachang collected gold in the women's 200m freestyle.

Bangkok swimmers also won both gold medals in the men's and women's 4x100m medley relays, while Praew Wibulsuk won gold for Chiang Mai in the women's 100m backstroke.

Bangkok's national team cyclist Sitthichai Ritthisilp won the men's sprint and also led his team-mates to victory in the team event.

Prakan Karndee struck gold for Bangkok in the men's individual centre-fire pistol event and the province's shooters also took the team competition.

Chiang Mai's Punrada Mekawutthikul won gold in the women's individual rifle event and the province also won the team event.

Suthiya Jiewchaleommit, a gold medallist at this year's World University Games, took the women's skeet gold for Prae.

In yesterday's wushu competition featuring combat and martial art displays, Ang Thong won three gold in the men's under 45kg and under 48kg categories and in the women's under 44kg divisions in the combat category.

Saraburi won two gold, while Sakon Nakhon, Uttaradit, Buri Ram, Chanthaburi and Phatthalung shared one gold apiece in the combat category.

Chon Buri won two gold, with Ratchaburi taking the last gold in the displays category.

In wrestling, Chumphon, Chiang Rai, Yala and Krabi shared one gold apiece in the men's under 50kg, under 74kg, under 60kg, and under 96kg classes respectively.

Prae and Chon Buri took one gold each in the women's under 51kg and in the under 55kg divisions.

Chiang Rai's bodybuilders took the men's flyweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions.

Suphan Buri also won three gold in the men's light middleweight, middleweight and in the light heavyweight classes.

Chanthaburi and Bangkok won one gold each in the men's bantamweight and heavyweight categories.

In the amateur muay Thai competition, Chon Buri fighters made it to the finals in four classes, while boxers from Chon Buri advanced to the finals of the amateur boxing in six divisions.

Today in the men's soccer, defending champions Si Sa Ket face Narathiwat, while Kanchanaburi take on Suphan Buri in the semi-finals.

Chon Buri meet Suphan Buri, while Khon Kaen clash with Si Sa Ket in the women's semi-finals.
