City swimmers rule in the pool

[NATIONAL GAMES] Bangkok's swimmers made a clean sweep of six gold medals to stretch their lead in the medal standings in the 35th National Games in Suphan Buri yesterday.

Besides winning gold, Bangkok swimmers smashed two more national records. Panwad Jitpairot set the Games' record of 34.44 seconds in the women's 50m breaststroke. The second record came from Worrawut Ampaiwan, who clocked 29.61 seconds in men's 50m breaststroke. This was his second record in the Games. On the previous day, he erased the men's 100m breaststroke.

Bangkok's four other gold medals came from Suphawat Aroonsrimorrakot in the men's 400m freestyle, Seksan Suksupak and Wenika Kaewchaiwong in the men's and women's 200m backstroke events, and in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.

Former national gymnast Rachawat Kaewpanya, who hails from Chiang Mai and who won the men's individual all-round gold on Wednesday, was in a remarkable form, taking four of the six gold medals on offer in the men's apparatus in artistic gymnastics competition.

He claimed the floor exercise, horizontal bar and then parallel bars titles before underlining his supremacy in the vaulting horse.

Sukhothai's Kanokporn Martin won three of four events in the women's section, starting with the vault and then coming up with an impressive performance to top the score in the uneven bars.

Bangkok took the lion's share in shooting after claiming three gold. Suphamas Wankaew fired 596 points to take the women's rifle prone and also helped the province win the team event. Warawut Majchachip handed Lampang the men's air rifle crown and also led his team-mates to gold in the air rifle team.

In cycling, Chon Buri's former national rider Titthakorn Kaosriwong stunned national champion Sitthichai Ritthisilp of Bangkok in the men's 1km time trial. Wathinee Luekhajorn made amends for Bangkok's loss by taking the women's 500m time trial.

Si Sa Ket seized four gold on the final day of weightlifting, with national lifter Annipa Multa making a clean sweep in the women's over 75kg category.

Tossapon Khajornpech gave the province the other gold in the men's over 105kg class, while the remaining two golds were won by Bangkok and Kanchanaburi.

Chairat Lorprakarnsit added two golds for Nakhon Ratchasima in the men's 105kg division.
