Monson to file new suit today

American businessman William Monson will today file a new criminal lawsuit against caretaker premier Thaksin Shinawatra over a disputed business deal, his lawyer said yesterday.
Poramet Sutabet said he would file a charge accusing Thaksin of lying under oath when he accused Monson of embezzlement in 1989 in a criminal court. On Monday, the South Bangkok Criminal Court dropped a lawsuit filed by Monson against Thaksin on grounds that its statute of limitations had expired. Thaksin and Monson have sued each other several times since 1989. In May, Monson re-filed a perjury charge against Thaksin and his former cable-TV firm International Broadcasting Corporation (IBC). The Criminal Court agreed on June 19 to hold a preliminary examination. Five hearings are scheduled, starting next Monday. Thaksin and IBC were accused of breaking a joint-venture contract and failing to transfer the rights to operate IBC to Monson's firm Video Link. IBC was, meanwhile, a complainant in a criminal prosecution that accused Monson of embezzling transmission equipment. The American was acquitted of the charge.
