EC may look into PM's Tv programme

The Election Commission (EC) may look into caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's interview broadcast on Channel 5 on Wednesday, if there are any complaints that it is against the electoral law, a newly-selected EC member said.

Sumet Oupanisakorn, one of the five new election commissioners, said the EC would try to determine whether the PM talked about government policies in general  or was trying to woo support from voters.

"If there is a complaint that the interview could cause certain political parties to be taken advantage of, we will have to discuss it to determine if the electoral law has been violated," he said.

Sumet was referring to Thaksin's interview broadcast during the "Sanam Pao Station" programme yesterday morning.

The appointments of the five election commissioners are awaiting royal endorsement. They are scheduled to meet today to select the EC chairman.
