Paradorn and Danai march on

[TENNIS] Thailand's top two men's players, Paradorn Srichaphan and Danai Udomchoke, advanced to the second round of the US$500,000 China Open in Beijing yesterday in preparation for their Davis Cup tie against Germany.
The sixth-seeded Paradorn, who slumps to No 47 in the rankings this week after his second round exit at the US Open, beat the 86th-ranked Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-3 6-3, settling an old score - his loss to the German six years ago in Memphis. Danai came back to life after losing the first set 6-0 by beating Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli 0-6 6-2 6-3 for his second win at the ATP level this season. His first came in Indianapolis two months ago. Paradorn, one of four Asians to move past the first round yesterday, enjoyed an early break to take the first set before making another crucial break in the eighth game of the second set to win the match. He will take on the winner of the match between Australian Nathan Healey and a qualifier in the second round. Danai, who will join Paradorn in the Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie against Germany next weekend in Dusseldorf, lined up a second round clash against either big-serving seventh-seeded Ivo Karlovic or a qualifier in round two. But the bad news for Thai fans came in the doubles competition, when twins Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana bowed out in the first round following their 6-2 6-3 defeat to third-seeded Eric Butorac and Travis Parrott of the US. Other Asian winners on the day were Taiwan's Wang Yeu-tzuoo, who beat China's Xin-Yuan 6-1 6-4, and eighth-seeded Hyung-taik of South Korea, who ousted Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-3 6-4.
