First anti-Thaksin protest for Chula

Members of Chulalongkorn University's Political Science Faculty will on Thursday stage their first public protest to call for caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's ouster.
Anan Laolertveerakul, a leader of the Chulalongkorn Network to Uphold Integrity for Democracy, said several hundred Chulalongkorn students and lecturers would gather on the ground outside the faculty in their first move to oust Thaksin. "It will be a significant step for our university to tell the public that Chula people do not want a national leader who lacks moral integrity,'' he said. Meanwhile, the anti-Thaksin People's Alliance for Democracy has sought permission from Chiang Mai University Rector Assoc Prof Pongsak Angasithi to hold a rally in the main university hall at the end of the month. Pongsak said all political groups were welcome to use the hall, but it would take a few days to decide on the PAD's request. He cited safety as the main concern, saying he did not want a repeat of the incident in March when government supporters threw rocks and bottles on the stage during a Democrat Party meeting in the university's art museum. Suriyan Thongnu-iad, a PAD leader, said he would ask the Third Army Region and Region Five Police to provide security for the rally. "We chose a venue that we believe can prevent a confrontation that might lead to violence,'' he said.
