UK man can be extradited

The Criminal Court yesterday ruled that a British man be extradited to his home country to face charges of killing his fiance.

Christopher Alan Caunter, 34, is wanted for allegedly murdering Deborah Jane Hamilton, 35, in July last year while both were fleeing from revenue officials who searched their company in East London.

Caunter claimed Hamilton jumped from his speeding vehicle after a heated dispute. She died in the incident and a local court in Great Britain issued an arrest warrant for Caunter.

The British suspect had been hiding in Thailand and was finally arrested here in late June. Caunter initially pleaded innocent but later gave a confession and decided not to fight his extradition.

The Criminal Court said yesterday Caunter had 15 days to appeal against the extradition ruling. If he did not, proceedings were expected to begin. However, if British authorities fail to extradite him within three months of the court ruling, Caunter would be released from custody.
