Monson to testify today

The US businessman who alleges caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra lied under oath is to give evidence today.
William Monson takes the stand in the prosecution of Thaksin for perjury. Monson's lawyer Poramet Sutabut said yesterday his client had arrived in Bangkok and was ready to deliver his testimony. Monson is currently president of United States-based Clearview Wireless. Thaksin stands accused in the Criminal Court at South Bangkok of perjury. Monson alleged Thaksin - as the chairman of International Broadcasting Corporation, the then operator of IBC cable television - gave false evidence in a statement to the Criminal Court in litigation in which IBC was a defendant. Monson also accused Thaksin and four other defendants including Pojaman Shinawatra, IBC, Duangruethai Jetbutra and Prateep Ajinpat of filing a false police report accusing Monson of embezzlement in 1989. Monson was found not guilty of that charge. The court has scheduled five hearing days for the perjury charges. The trial is expected to conclude on October 16.
