Highlight of the week :Suchon, new commissioners to meet

On Thursday, Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua is scheduled to meet with the five election commissioners selected by the upper house last week to discuss the selection of the Election Commission chairman.

Suchon will then submit the new EC appointments for royal endorsement.

The new EC members will then hold their first meeting to select the chairman and outline their tasks and responsibilities and set a new general election date, as the previous date of October 15 looks like being postponed.

The new EC will also have to pick a new secretary-general, a position former senator Kaewsan Atibodhi put himself forward for after failing to secure a post as an election commissioner.

Court to consider petition

The Constitution Court will tomorrow begin its consideration of a Senate petition for a ruling on the qualifications of five nominees for the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC).

The petition asks whether the five nominees for the anti-graft body are actually qualified, as the Constitution states that an NCCC commissioner has to hold the rank of director-general, or equivalent, in the civil service.

TRT strategy meeting

Although Thai Rak Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra will still be on a trip abroad, the party will hold a meeting tomorrow to prepare its campaign for the general election.

Thai Rak Thai secretary-general Suriya Jungrungreangkit will chair the meeting. The party campaigning is expected to include a mass transport master plan for Bangkok and promises of better and cheaper Skytrain services.
