THREE-YEAR PLAN
Landmark aims high

Major refurbishment for Sukhumvit hotel

The Landmark plans to spend Bt740 million to Bt1.1 billion over the next three years in a major refurbishment aimed at making the hotel one of the best in Bangkok.

The hotel will renovate the commercial plaza, executive floors, meeting rooms and guest rooms. It will also add a full-service spa, separate from the hotel's fitness centre.

"As manager, I want to be a part of changes that always offer new things to customers," said general manager Frank Clovyn.

At 17 years, the hotel now claims to be one of the longest-established hotels along the business district of Sukhumvit Road, growing in residential wealth along with the BTS Skytrain system. The opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport could also stimulate the hotel business in Bangkok as it can accommodate more international flights.

With this potential, Sukhumvit has attracted more international hotel chains, including Crown Plaza Hotel, Sofitel, The Regent and Ritz Carlton Hotel, plus the existing JW Marriott, Sheraton, Novotel and four- and five-star local hotels.

Clovyn said that the Landmark would reclaim its position as one of the best hotels in Bangkok by offering new technology such as LCD computerised systems as well as bigger bathrooms. Closed-circuit TVs will be installed to enhance security. The hotel is renovating its top 31st floor, which includes the Club Lounge area and a new concept venue: RR & B, short for rib room and Bar.

The hotel is spending Bt20 million for that facelift, and expects to reopen the floor in November. The floor will offer one of Bangkok's best views, aimed to draw more high-end visitors, both local and overseas.

"We believed we will cover the investment [on that floor] within 17 months," said Clovyn.

The hotel is now running at a 76 per cent occupancy rate, the same figure as last year. But revenue is 17 per cent higher.

Clovyn added that the hotel also plans to develop a five-star hotel on Phetchaburi Road. The property will focus on business travellers and is expected to open in 2008.
