PAD plans major rallies in provincial

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) plans to hold simultaneous rallies at Sanam Luang in Bangkok, in Chiang Mai and in Buri Ram later this month, PAD co-ordinator Suriyasai Katasila said yesterday.

He said the PAD has yet to make preparations for the rallies in Chiang Mai and Buri Ram, which are strongholds of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and PM's Office Minister Newin Chidchob, respectively.

Suriyasai said the PAD is working with co-ordinators in Chiang Mai and Buri Ram to ensure the safety of the demonstrators.

"We will concentrate the rallies in the North and the Northeast areas in order to explain the swindles of Thaksin's regime, the hidden agenda of the Thaksin government and what he is going to do after the general election," Suriyasai said.

He said the PAD was not worried about the threat from caretaker Interior Minister Kongsak Wantana, who yesterday warned of drastic legal action against the PAD if their rallies turned provocative.

Kongsak said yesterday he had instructed provincial governors and district chiefs as well as other government agencies concerned to keep a close watch on PAD rallies in northern provinces.
