Flash floods hit several provinces in the lower North bordering the Nan and Yom rivers on the weekend, killing three people in Sukhothai and displacing hundreds of people.
In Phichit, spectators watching a rowboat race on the Nan River had to scurry to their homes after the course commentator announced over the loudspeakers that a wall of water caused by a collapsed water gate was sweeping towards their district. Three people drowned in Sukhothai's Sawankhalok district, including a boy who was rowing a boat with friends. The search for a train driver who went missing after a locomotive plunged into the Yom River in Phrae was continuing. In Phitsanulok, local residents are bracing for flash flooding after the water level in the Nan River yesterday rose to just 40cm below the critical level at a water gate. Several locations in Muang Lamphun district are under 2m of water as the level in the Kuang River is an average 1m above the critical level. A section of the Ping River in Chiang Mai is still filled to the brim and occasionally swelling over, but the spillage was being contained by a section of walls made of sandbags. Seven villages in three districts in Lampang province are facing heavy flooding with most of the residents being forced to live on the second floor of their homes. A total of 1,000 relief supply kits have been distributed to those affected.
