NBC Candidates: Judge upholds cancellation of second round of selection

A Supreme Administrative Court judge yesterday provisionally upheld an order to cancel the second selection of members for the National Broadcasting Commission.
"Even though the first round was cancelled by the [lower] court's order, the NBC screening committee insisted on continuing its work in the second round," Wisanu Waranyu, the case judge, said.Authorities had failed to rectify mistakes cited by the court in the first round before trying again, he said. The case judge's ruling needs to be confirmed by the full court before it is binding. NCCC selection: Senators ask 11 judges to abstain Two outgoing senators yesterday asked 11 Constitution Court justices to excuse themselves for conflict-of-interest reasons from ruling on candidates for the anti-graft agency. Karoon Sai-ngam and Somboon Thongburan said the 11 judges were guilty of hiking their compensation without going through proper channels. Last year, a group of senators filed a petition to the National Counter Corruption Commission accusing the Constitution Court judges of abuse of authority. Even though Kramol Thongthammachart, then president of the charter court, has retired, 11 of those judges remain on the bench. The case is still under consideration by the NCCC. Water Project: Opposition seeks probe into bid Democrat deputy spokesman Yuthapong Charatsatien yesterday asked the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to investigate the terms of reference (ToR) for bidding on a contract to build a water supply system in Nakhon Ratchasima. He said the requirement that bidders should have previous experience of building a water-supply system costing at least Bt500 million led him to believe the ToR were meant to exclude all but three contractors - Ch Karnchang Plc, Sam Prasit Group and Italian-Thai Development Plc.
