TRT pledges big, cheap rail system

Firing an early volley in the battle for Bangkok residents' political support, the Thai Rak Thai Party is promising Bt15 rides on an extensive new rail system in the capital - if they vote it back into power.
The system will feature 10 electric-train routes covering a stretch of 300 kilometres across Bangkok. "This policy is part of our election campaign," Government Spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee said yesterday. Party leader and caretaker premier Thaksin Shinawatra had also recommended constructing home units along the new lines so that people could enjoy convenient access to the services, Surapong said. The Democrats recently promoted a policy of building seven more electric-rail lines in the capital covering more than 100 kilometres. "We're emphasising a comprehensive system to ensure that people enjoy true transport convenience. We will also ensure a cheap flat rate," Surapong said. Surapong was speaking after Thaksin met with members of the caretaker Cabinet at his official residence. The meeting discussed the plan to construct 10 electric-train routes in the capital. "The rail-based system will save people money and time, and reduce the country's energy consumption," he said. Traffic congestion in Bangkok costs the country billions of baht in imported oil every year. Asked about the plan's financial viability, Surapong said the policy could be realised through government investment in the system - not granting a concession to a profit-oriented private investor. "Our new concept and management style shall make the project viable," he claimed. Critics had questioned the feasibility of Thai Rak Thai's Bt30-per-visit health scheme several years ago, he said, but "it has been put in place and benefits the people". He said Thai Rak Thai had also prepared health and education policies for people living outside Bangkok. Piyanart Srivalo The Nation
