Disabilities cost families Bt50 bn

The country shoulders up to Bt50 billion in extra expense each year to take care of children with learning disabilities, short attention spans and autism, the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) announced yesterday.

NRCT secretary-general Anon Bunyarattawej said the estimate was based on a survey that found each family would have to spend up to Bt50,000 extra per year on a child that had learning disabilities, short concentration span or autism.

There are between 425,000 and 1.2 million children in these groups across the country.

"So, it is urgent that we study how to develop these children," Anon said. The council already funds research by Kasetsart University's demonstration school on how to empower students with learning disabilities, short concentration spans and autism, he said.

Anon said the study was necessary given the fact that society still lacked understanding on how to provide such students with proper education and support.

"With the right support and education, they can contribute to the country," he said.

These students also had a constitutional right to receive education suited to their needs, which would allow them to live happily in society, he said.
