His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn yesterday visited soldiers injured in a bomb attack in Yala on Saturday.
His Royal Highness brought gifts for servicemen and asked Yala Hospital staff to ensure the five soldiers were well looked after, according to director Dr Wattana Wattanayagorn.The five were seriously injured when a powerful roadside bomb was detonated as their vehicle passed through a remote area of Bannang Sata district on Saturday. The explosion killed two men, including Colonel Suthisak Prasertsri, provincial army commander. He is the highest-ranking military officer to lose his life since violence erupted in the deep South in early 2004. Pvt Phanuwat Thanya was also killed instantly in the blast. Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin warned all senior officers to exercise caution and noted extremists would target all ranks. In another attack in Yala, suspected militants yesterday shot dead a man at a petrol station at Kue Long in Bannang Sata, police said. Witnesses said two men on a motorcycle fired at Sujin Jitrban, 57, with a pistol as he was filling his pickup truck.
