No more flat rate subsidies : Education Ministry

The Office of the Basic Education Commission is pushing for the end of flat rate school subsidies.

Commission deputy secretary general Chinnapat Bhumirat was hopeful the new plan would take effect next year.

The subsidy change would see each school receive money based on their stipends, student needs and special needs. Government specialproject schools would be entitled to higher subsidies.

At present the state gives schools an annual subsidy calcu¬lated at a rate of Bt1,100 per pri¬mary student, Bt1,800 for every juniorsecondary pupil enrolled and Bt2,700 for each senior secondary student.

Chinnapat said on Monday subsidies based on individual school needs was fairer.

"Schools with a teacher shortage or with disabled students should get higher subsidies," he said. He added the office would finalise the new rates by the end of the month.

The proposal would then be referred to caretaker Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang, the Budget Bureau and the National Economic and Social Development Board.
