SUV theft thwarted

Border officials yesterday detained two Cambodian soldiers suspected of attempting to smuggle a stolen sport utility vehicle out of Thailand.

Two Khmer soldiers are suspected of attempting to take a Toyota Fortuna SUV out of Thailand using an official Cambodian motorcade as cover.

The convoy was carrying Cambodian officials from a cross-border social function at Aranyaprathet.

Border officers noticed an additional vehicle in the convoy when it departed Thailand, provoking suspicion the SUV may have been stolen.

The two soldiers were unable to provide ownership documents for the vehicle.

Tambon Klong Lek police superintendent Major Subin Boonlek said the theft was likely committed by a cross-border crime syndicate.

He said the vehicle was registered to Tambon Ban Mai's kamnan, Banphot Sriprom.

Police would be questioning the owner.
