Suchanan fails in Open bid

[TENNIS] Suchanan Viratprasert's dream of making it to the main draw of a Grand Slam was dashed as she was eliminated from the US Open second qualifying round yesterday.

Suchanan was the last Thai hope in the qualifying event following the early exits of both Tamarine Tanasugarn and Danai Udomchoke.

The 23-year-old could not tackle the powerful game of American Angela Haynes and lost 6-2 6-4 in just over an hour in the rain-delayed match.

Suchanan has played in the qualifying competitions of three Grand Slams this year - the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open - but never progressed beyond the second round.

Her exit means Paradorn Srichaphan will be the only Thai at Flushing Meadows this year. Paradorn will play in the first round against Argentine Jose Acasuso.

Meanwhile, the organisers of the Thailand Open will give away free tickets for schools which intend to bring their students in groups to witness the country's biggest tennis event. Interested schools can contact BEC-Tero at (02) 262 3815 to reserve their seats.

BEC said demand for tickets for the ATP Thailand Open - especially for the finals - had been high this year. Ticket prices range from Bt300 to Bt1,500. The tournament will be held at the Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani from September 24 to October 1.

Mauresmo downed

n No matter the state of her game, Lindsay Davenport always gets the best of Amelie Mauresmo, especially at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven, Connecticut.

Davenport, the defending champion, knocked off the No 1-ranked Mauresmo 6-4 7-5 on Thursday night to advance to the semi-finals of the US Open tune-up. Davenport has won their last nine meetings, dropping just one set over that stretch.

And in New Haven, the two have played each other five times since 1999, with Davenport going 5-0, including in last year's final.

"Some players you match up well against, others you don't," said Davenport, playing in only her fifth tournament of 2006 because of a back injury. "I always go into a match with the utmost respect for her and know that I have to play well."

Both players appeared a little rusty at times on Thursday, although Davenport's service game was solid most of the night and that made the difference against the often-erratic Mauresmo.

Davenport closed out the first set with two straight aces. She had eight in the match and was able to mix up her delivery, hitting clean angles and painting the centre line. "I really felt at ease with everything, felt good about what I was doing," Davenport said. "It's still a huge success for me to be in the semi-finals."
