Chamlong says Class 7 officers not behind plot

Chamlong Srimuang, a leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy, yesterday dismissed allegations that his fellow officers from Class 7 of the Chulachomklao Military Academy, including Pallop Pinmanee, were linked to the alleged plot to kill the prime minister.
"If Class 7 officers were involved, the mission [to kill Thaksin Shinawatra] would have been accomplished long ago," he said. Chamlong voiced suspicion that Thaksin was crying wolf in order to distract attention from problems facing his government. "The news about a car full of explosives seems to have conveniently overshadowed other troubling reports like the Kularb Kaew nominee case and the bullying tactics against anti-Thaksin protesters," he said. He was referring to the official investigation into Thaksin's sale of Shin Corp via a nominee of Singapore's Temasek Holdings. He said Thaksin appeared to be portraying the Chulachomklao Class 7 in a bad light order to win sympathy. The government and relevant authorities seemed to make conflicting remarks on the alleged plot and failed to justify Pallop's dismissal as deputy director of the Internal Security Operation Command, Chamlong said. "I don't think Pallop wanted to kill the prime minister because it is unbecoming for an elder to act childishly towards a younger man," he said. Chamlong said he believed Thaksin tried to portray Pallop as being involved in order to smear the PAD, since he and Pallop were close. He also accused Thaksin of trying to sway the public into believing that Privy Council president General Prem Tinsulanonda was behind the alleged plot. "It is nonsense to dispatch a group of people to petition Prem to spare Thaksin's life," he said.
