Top court asked to rule

Caretaker Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua has asked the Constitution Court to rule on the qualifications of five nominees for the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC).

In a statement yesterday Suchon said he had asked the court to rule on a conflict between the Senate proper and its NCCC selection committee.

The Constitution states counter-corruption commissioners must have held the rank of director general in the civil service, or its private-sector equivalent.

The selection committee considered the five nominees qualified. The Senate questioned the definition of "equivalent" and asked Suchon to seek a ruling.

The Senate's selection of a new corruption-busting body had been expected to be finished last week.

The five nominees in question are National Economic and Social Development Board deputy secretary-general Santi Bangor, Deputy Auditor-General Sajja Sasanawin, Basic Education Commission deputy secretary-general Areerat Watanasin, National Police Commission assistant commissioner Lt General Wanchai Srinualnad and former Suan Sunantha Rajabhat University rector Dilok Bunruangrod.
