Tamarine makes exit

[TENNIS] Tamarine Tanasugarn suffered an early loss on Thursday as she went down to qualifier Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg in the second round of the US$100,000 GHI Bronx Tennis Classic in New York.
Tamarine convincingly won the first set 6-1 but her game fell apart in the following sets, losing 3-6 4-6 in her warm-up event before US Open qualifying, which begins next week. But Napaporn Tongsalee is still alive in the tournament, pairing up with Romana Tedjakusuma of Indonesia to beat Britain's Katie O'Brien and Margit Ruutel of Estonia 7-5 7-5. Waiting for them in the semi-final will be American Julie Ditty and Natalie Grandin of South Africa. On the men's side, Danai Udomchoke and Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan went down to third-seeded Jeff Coetzee of South Africa and American Robert Kendrick 6-3 6-3 in the doubles quarter-finals. Sonchat Ratiwatana also bowed out in the same round when he and Briton Joshua Goodall fell to Britain's Martin Lee and Harel Levy of Israel 4-6 6-2 (10-6). Meanwhile, South Korean Chung Hee-seok remained on course for back-to-back titles as he upset American fifth-seeded Jonathan Chu 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 6-4 in the semi-finals of the $15,000 PTT-LTAT Bangkok Open at the Tennis Academy of Asia yesterday. Chung, who won the previous leg last week at the Rama Gardens Hotel, faces Australian second-seeded Nick Lindahl, who ousted Victor Kolik of Israel 6-1 6-4, in today's final. Top pair Yu Xin-Yuan and Zheng Shao-Xuan of China edged second-seeded An Jae-Sung and Chung Hee-Seok of South Korea 6-2 4-6 6-2 in the doubles final.
