Prem's nine-point guide to good leadership

A good leader possesses nine virtues, including adhering to a uniform standard, practising honesty and demonstrating loyalty to the monarchy, His Majesty the King's chief adviser said yesterday.
"If everyone follows the royal advice, then the country will prevail in peace and happiness," Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda told a seminar organised by Chulalongkorn University's Political Science Faculty. The nine virtues are as follows. lObserving a consistent standard. A leader should not resort to double standards or engage in conflicting actions, as this will cause confusion and damage. lLiving with high morals. A leader should subscribe to the Buddhist Five Precepts at all times. lEmbracing Thainess. A leader should adhere to the Thai way of life and thinking in order to make constructive contributions to society. lUpholding righteousness. A leader should win praise, respect and trust by performing his duties with justice and professional ethics. lMaintaining honesty. A leader should be sincere and loyal to the monarch and the motherland. lActing as a role model for society. A leader should lead by example. lWorking with compassion. A leader should be fully devoted to the job at hand. Tasks like the eradication of poverty and the suppression of southern violence cannot be accomplished if the leader does not empathise with the plight of the people. lStriving to repay the motherland. A leader should constantly push himself to do good for society and refrain from causing trouble. lHeeding royal advice. A leader should take upon himself as a sacred duty to act on the King's remarks, including the theory of sufficiency economy.
