Sulak case closed

The Criminal Court yesterday threw out a criminal case against social critic Sulak Sivarak for his role in campaigning against a controversial gas pipeline project between Thailand and Burma undertaken by the then Petroleum Authority of Thailand.

In its decision, the court said the Petroleum Authority of Thailand, then a government agency was no longer one, and had since changed into a public entity. The Petroleum Authority of Thailand became a public company and was renamed PTT on October 1, 2001.

"Since the Petroleum Authority of Thailand Act became null and void after the defendant and 30 others carried out their acts, there are now no laws incriminating what they did," the court said.

Sulak and his friends were taken to court by Petroleum Authority of Thailand for forming a human chain in March 1998 to block the path of heavy machinery used in construction works relating to the pipeline project.
