Markets beckon for jewellery, leather

Jewellery exports to Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia have surged almost 100 per cent in the first half of this year, according to the Export Promotion Department.
Its director-general Chantra Purnariksha said Thai jewellery designs are particularly attractive to Scandinavians, so exporters should be working to boost sales there. The department reported that the value of Thailand's exports to Denmark jumped 98.5 per cent to US$12.9 million (Bt482.77 million) in the first half, compared with $6.5 million in the corresponding period last year. It said Thai jewellery currently holds a 1- to 4-per-cent share of the market in Denmark, where China, India and Indonesia are among its main competitors. Meanwhile, he said leather-bag manufacturers should focus on the Middle East, because of the high purchasing power there. The United Arab Emirates, which is a centre for distributing goods, has doubled its imports of ladies' accessories since 2004, Chantra said. Petchanet Pratruangkrai
