Sulphurous sensations

A Bangkok spa offers a dip in the geothermal waters of New Zealand
If you think the Bangkok spa scene is beginning to look a little dull, check out the new Wai Ora Spa on Sukhumvit Soi 42. This unique cultural spa is based on the world-famous Hell's Gate and Wai Ora Spa in Rotorua, New Zealand. The Wai Ora (a Maori word meaning healing waters) therapies are based on the waters and geothermal muds from the reserve, which have been used by the local people for more than 700 years, as well as the traditional healing and massage techniques of the Maori. This spa regime has been combined with Thailand's renowned spa therapies, particularly the Thai massage. First time visitors should try the 60-minute Wai Ora Massage (Bt2,500) which utilises the Maori's ancient massage technique for warriors called the Mirimiri. The procedure involves a very relaxing full-body massage, including the buttocks, using the highly moisturising Manuka Oil, and ends with the therapist saying a prayer for protection called Karakia. Other highlights of the spa are the three Hot Mineral Pools (30 minutes, Bt1,200) filled with the geothermal water from Hell's Gate. A dip in each pool yields different skincare benefits; the first cleanses the skin while the second provides nourishment and the third protects skin from harmful pollution, giving a nice prelude to any treatment that follows. All facial and body treatments use the Alite mud spa product range. An annual membership fee of Bt2,500 applies for which you get one hour of any treatment, 10 per cent discount on all spa services and products, Alite mud beauty products worth Bt2,000 and membership both of the Wai Ora Spa here and in New Zealand. The spa is open daily from noon to 10pm. It is inside the Tee-Off driving range on Sukumvit Soi 42/1, next to Srivikorn School.
