Ex-Miss Universe joins the well-wishers

Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova signs a get-well book at Siriraj Hospital yesterday.
His Majesty the King is getting stronger, is able to walk with a walking aid, can shift position more comfortably and sit at his working desk, according to the Royal Household Bureau.

The bureau's 16th statement on His Majesty's condition came yesterday as a steady stream of people continued to gather outside Siriraj Hospital and to sign get-well books wishing for his speedy recovery.

The King underwent surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis last month.

Free ferry services are now being provided for people going to Siriraj Hospital. The service, an arrangement between the Water Transport Department and a private ferry company, Supattra Co Ltd, will operate from Phra Chan and Wang Lang (Siriraj) piers between 9am and 3pm daily.

Among the well-wishers yesterday was Miss Universe 2005, Natalie Glebova, who signed: "Long live the King in good health and well-being". She said she was impressed by the way Thai people expressed their love and wishes for His Majesty's recovery.

Counsellor to the Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe in Malaysia, Dominic Buhera, signed the get-well book on behalf of the Zimbabwean people and left a basket of flowers for His Majesty.

Nation Multimedia Group chairman Thanachai Theerapatta-navong and other executives also signed their hopes for the King's speedy recovery.

About 80 residents of Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya municipality presented a pair of anointed 1.9-metre-long plaided carp fish as auspicious items to His Majesty, while nun Kimhiang Chusuk and Phitsanulok residents presented nine Buddha images.

Other well-wishers included Naew Na columnist Prasong Soonsiri, Rotary Foundation of Thailand president Kasemchai Nithiwanakul, 57 members of the elderly club from Nan Province's Pua district, 20 teachers and students from Phra Haruthai Pattanavej School and about 100 crime-watch volunteers.

The dean of the Medical Faculty at Siriraj Hospital, Dr Piyasakol Sakolsattayathorn, said His Majesty's condition has improved greatly. It is the longest time His Majesty has ever been in the hospital, and everyone involved is working to the best of their ability.

City police chief Wiroj Chan-tharangsi, who made a security inspection of the hospital yesterday, said he had undercover officers mingling with the yellow-clad crowd outside, to ensure order. Pran Nok and Arunamarin roads are being fixed in preparation for the day His Majesty returns to Chitralada Palace, he said.

Meanwhile, at Sala Sahathai Samakhom in the Grand Palace compound, people offered their wishes for Her Majesty the Queen's recovery from Sunday's eye surgery.

They included the president of the Foundation for Preservation and Development of Thai Aircraft, Group Captain Veerayuth Didy-asarin, Shin Corp chairman Pong Sarasin and staff and students from Ratcniyom School in Nonthaburi.
