Nungnadda marches on

Rising star Nungnadda Wannasuk beat second-seed Maki Arai of Japan to progress to the women's singles quarter-finals of the US$10,000 PTT Bangkok Open Circuit 2 at the Tennis Academy of Asia Tennis Centre yesterday.
The Nakhon Ratchasima-born 16-year-old proved a giant-killer by defeating her more experienced Japanese rival 7-5 2-6 6-0 in the second round. Nungnadda will next take on Uzbekistan's Dilyara Saidkhodjaeva who stopped the run of last week's champion Venise Chan Wing-Yau of Hong Kong 4-6 6-0 6-3. Top seed Nudnida Luangnam survived a tough challenge from Marinne Giraud of Mauritius 3-6 6-1 7-6 (7-3). She will next play Dutchwoman Selma Andrade who thrashed Japan's Kaori Aoyama 6-3 6-3. Meanwhile, compatriots Sophia Mulsap and Varatchaya Wongteanchai ended their run in the second round. Sophia suffered a 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 loss to Tananta Lavinia of Indonesia, while Varatchaya went down to Indonesian Ayu-Fani Damayanti 6-2 6-1. Vlada Ekshibarova of Uzbekistan defeated Taiwanese Kao Shao-yuan 6-4 0-6 6-0 while Indian qualifier Asha Nanda Kumar upset fourth-seeded Czarina-Mae Arevalo of the Philippines 7-5 4-6 6-3.
