Court to call for nominations

The Supreme Court will start the selection of new election commissioners today, and could nominate 10 candidates within 20 days, the Supreme Court secretary Wirat Chinwinitkul said yesterday.

The Supreme Court would announce nominations open today so that interested people could send their intentions to the court. After verifying the nominees' qualifications, the court would convene its judges to consider and select five or 10 of the most suitable candidates when requested by the Senate speaker, he said.

The court had been ready to start the process for a long time but was still waiting for Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua to submit his request, he added.

It was up to Suchon whether to ask for five nominations initially, or 10 nominations at one time. Suchon would also have to decide whether to adhere to the 30-day time limit from the day the current election commissioners relinquished their posts.

Suchon will meet the Senate's legal team at 9am today to discuss what to do next.
