Bangkokians pawn 25% more

The total value of goods pawned by Bangkok residents rose nearly 25 per cent in the nine months starting last October, compared to the same period a year ago, Bangkok Metropolitan pawnshop director Boonlert Pattanaroong-anothai said yesterday.
The value of personal possessions pawned in Bangkok in May rose 41.04 per cent year on year, to the highest level reported in the past decade, Boonlert said. From last October to last month, Bangkok's pawnshops received about Bt4.38 billion worth of personal items, an increase of Bt859 million from the year-before period, he said. The total value of unclaimed items at pawnshops rose to about Bt1.75 billion during the period due to the economic slowdown, and rising oil and gold prices, he said. People pawned goods worth Bt444.99 million during the World Cup last month, an increase of almost 13 per cent from the same month last year, Boonlert said. However, the amount was Bt163 million less than in May, when schools reopened for this academic year, he said.
