World Cup sparks text message frenzy

About 38 million SMS messages have been sent by mobile-phone users participating in competitions relating to the World Cup football tournament in Germany, according to a Kasikorn Research Centre study released yesterday.
At an average rate of Bt6 per use of the Short Message Service, mobile-phone service providers and owners of businesses announcing promotional packages have earned around Bt230 million during the tournament. During one World Cup match, about 600,000 messages were sent. The figures for each match vary depending on how popular the teams are, the study found. The report pointed out that mobile-phone users' chances of winning prizes are slim, and reminded young users of the dangers of wasting money on messaging. The delivery of SMS messages, the most popular additional service mobile phones offer, usually peaks on festive occasions like New Year's Day or Valentine's Day.
