World university presidents to meet here

International academics and education administrators will attend the World University Presidents' Summit in Bangkok from July 19-22.
The participants will discuss key issues related to higher education, with the main theme this year being "Reflections on Diversity and Harmonisation". The event will take place at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. Leading educators who will speak at the summit include Lord Christopher Patten, former governor of Hong Kong and European commissioner for external relations, who is now chancellor of Oxford and Newcastle universities. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne, Dr Chirayu Isarangkun na Ayuthaya, director of the Crown Property Bureau, will deliver a keynote address on "Sufficiency Economy and Higher Education" - a topic that the King is keen to promote. Edward de Bono, a well-known writer on education, will speak on "21st Century Learning Needs and the Role of Higher Education". "Sufficiency and Sustainability" will be one of the main topics discussed at the summit. Others areas of discussion will be cross-border education, global peace and governance, social stability, leadership and innovation, the digital economy and sports. Pavich Tongroach, secretary-general of the Commission on Higher Education, and chairman of the organising committee, said there would be exhibitions on His Majesty the King, education, and the government's "One Tambon, One Product" scheme. "We will also have Thai students taking care of the participants, which will provide a good opportunity for them to speak English," he added. "We are honoured to be hosting the summit. It will help us in academic matters and international networking. We are particularly proud to be able to showcase His Majesty the King's sufficiency economy concept, which could be immensely influential in higher education," said Pavich.
