Ericsson set to sprint into broadband

Ericsson Thailand will be more aggressive in tapping the fixed-broadband network market, following its parent company's acquisition of the global telecom network supplier Marconi late last year.
Hans O Karlsson, Ericsson Thailand's president and country manager, said that the acquisition strengthens the company's fixed broadband network portfolio in Thailand. This will also enable the company to offer complete wireless and fixed broadband network products and services to customers, according to Kriengkrai Nissyan, Ericsson Thailand's senior business development manager for broadband networks. Last October, the Swedish telecom company acquired Marconi's main businesses: optical networks, broadband and fixed radio access networks, data networking equipment. These account for 75 per cent of Marconi's revenue. On the local level, Ericsson Thailand completed the acquisition of Marconi Thailand last month. Both have been partners for years, jointly providing products in Ericsson's tenders for telecom projects in Thailand. Ericsson's main customers include TOT Plc and CAT Telecom Plc. The local broadband network market is growing fast, particularly on the back of surging data traffic. Thailand has more than 500,000 broadband Internet subscribers, up from more than 370,000 at the end of last year. The number is expected to reach 850,000 by the end of this year.
