Mudslide wrecks homes on Koh Chang

A mudslide destroyed bungalows on Trat's Koh Chang island yesterday as heavy rains lashed the Gulf of Thailand.
Rainstorms have deluged the island for the past few days, causing mudslides on Kho Mong hill to batter the Chokdee Resort at Ban Mab Khangkhao village yesterday morning. A row of four bungalows was damaged but no one was injured. Strong winds brought down three electricity poles at Ban Kaibae beach, where flash-floods also inundated many houses. No injuries were reported. Many fishing boats were forced to anchor at Ban Ao Sapparod until the rains stopped. Three boats anchoring at Ban Kaibae were sunk by huge waves and strong winds. Tourists on the island flocked to the port and waited to be transported back to the coast of Trat province. In Rayong, Muang Rayong municipality was hit by flash-floods after rainstorms lashed the district on Saturday night. The floods, which reached waist level in some places, submerged Sukhumvit Road, villages and durian orchards. The Meteorological Department yesterday issued a warning that the southwesterly monsoon would trigger more rainstorms in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand over the next few days. Rayong, Chon Buri and Trat were alerted to the possibility of flash-floods and small boats were warned not to leave port during the period. In Prachuab Khiri Khan province, locals were evacuated to higher ground after rain fell for 48 hours, causing flash-floods and leaving some areas submerged in two metres of water. Rescue teams used six boats to rescue marooned victims. Traffic on Phetkasem Highway was also affected by floodwaters. However, no casualties were reported yet. Local administrative officers were ordered to monitor the situation around the clock.
