Bad cops removed

The superintendent of Bangkok's Phya Thai police station and four senior officers have been banished to remote posts after they were found responsible for a major gambling den operating in Pratunam.

The move came after an internal police investigation into the casino, which was raided by police two months ago.

Colonel Karun Klinprayoon was assigned to an insignificant post in Buri Ram while LtColonels Wisitsak Aphaiwong and Sertsak Khongyoo will move to Yasothon and Sakon Nakhon respectively. Majors Narong Theswibool and Saming Rodrattasa will take new positions in Uthai Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The transfer orders involving all five men as well as six other officers on routine rotation will be effective from August 1.

In another case, the Taling Chan Subdistrict Court handed down sixmonth prison terms to 10 people who had operated a gambling den on a condominium rooftop and fined 393 patrons of the den Bt2,000 each.

Pol Sr SgtMajor Manas Termthanasak, who was also nabbed in Tuesday's raid on the rooftop den, had his request for bail denied by Thon Buri Criminal Court. He has denied charges of helping to run an illegal gambling operation.

Police are investigating a new lead that Manas was also smuggling in videogame consoles
