IN BRIEF
Boonsak up

Thai ace Boonsak Ponsana yesterday progressed to the third round of the US$120,000 Malaysia Open after a struggle against Krishnan Yogendran of Malaysia 22-20 21-17 in Kuching.
World No 12 Boonsak, who ousted Malaysian Chong Wei Fong 21-12 21-8 in the first round, will next play China's Chen Hong. Compatriot Poompat Sapkulchananart also reached the third round, where he will take on Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark. Poompat thrashed Malaysian Azahar Azrihanif 21-18 21-12 in the first round and maintained his run with a 22-20 21-17 win over Palyama Dicky of the Netherlands yesterday. Sudket Prapakamol and Phattapol Ngernsrisuk pulled off a convincing 21-8 21-13 victory over Malayasia's Vong Xiang Wei and Tan Hin Loke in first round. The Thai duo next face South Koreans Jung Jae-sung and Lee Yong-dae in the second round. Team-mates Songphon Anukritayawan and Nattapon Nakthong could not make it that far after going down to Hong Kong's Indonesian-born Yohan Wiratama and Njoto Albertus 24-22 21-23 21-14.
Weerapat out The fantastic run of Weerapat Doakmaiklee ended yesterday when an arm injury forced him to retire during his quarter-final in the US$10,000 (Bt380,000) LTAT Bangkok Open ITF Men's Futures 2 at the Tennis Academy of Asia. The Thai was trailing Canadian Robert Steckly 6-2 and 1-0 when he decided to call it quits due to the muscle injury he has been carrying since Tuesday. It is doubtful whether the 19-year-old will be fit enough to play the third leg of the LTAT circuit, which kicks off next week. Weerapat has been in great form in recent days and made it to a semi-final for the first time last week. In the other quarter-finals, South Korean Kwon Hyung-tae narrowly beat Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic 6-1 6-7(2-7) 6-4 to set up a clash against Takahiro Terachi of Japan. American Lester Cook, the champion last week, ousted fellow-American Nathan Thompson 6-2 6-3 and will take on Steckly today.
