Attorney General Office to appeal ballot tearing cases

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) will appeal the cases of people who tore up their ballots in the April 2 election to the Supreme Court, OAG spokesman Attaphol Yaisawang said on Thursday.

On May 23, the Songkhla and Trang provincial courts rejected cases against voters who tore up their ballot papers to protest the controversial April 2 election on the grounds that the Constitution Court had nullified the April election as unconstitutional.

However, the attorneygeneral believes the tearing up of ballot papers was an illegal act regardless of the election's nullification, so the OAG will appeal the cases to the Supreme Court, Attaphol said.

"We will file charges against all of those who tore up ballots to discourage copycat behaviour. This kind of action causes damage to the country," Atthaphol said.
