IN BRIEF
Checks planned on gross-weight charges

The Department of Internal Trade said it would start inspecting department stores to ensure that the prices they charge do not include charges for packaging.
Department stores would have two to three weeks to ensure that they were not charging customers for packaging, DIT deputy director-general Songklod Ubolsing said yesterday. The DIT is particularly concerned about products priced by weight after receiving a high number of complaints that customers were being charged for the weight of the packaging, Songklod said. The department would focus on foods sold in foam trays with film wrapping, he said. "We get a lot of complaints from consumers that the weight of the products is quoted unfairly because it includes packaging to push up the price," he said. Legally, the price is calculated solely on the net weight of goods. However, it is common, for example, for a one-kilogram bag of sugar to have only 900 grams of sugar with the remaining 100 grams consisting of packaging. Department stores that do not adjust their prices to remove charges for packaging will be fined up to Bt20,000 and managers could face up to six months in jail, Songklod said. - The Nation. --------------------------------------------------------- Firms to launch 'Was Ist Was' Thai version Asia Television & Media Co Ltd and B-Plus Publishing Co Ltd have received a licence from German publisher Tessloff to launch a Thai-version of its "Was Ist Was" (What is What) family encyclopaedia.
