Supreme Court to debate EC candidates

The full bench of 86 Supreme Court judges is set to convene tomorrow to debate whether to nominate four candidates from which the Senate will pick two to fill the vacant seats in the Election Commission (EC).
"Whatever the outcome, it should help improve the political situation," Supreme Court secretary Wirach Chinwinijkul said yesterday. The top court expects the EC to review its own performance relating to the botched April 2 vote and decide what it can do in line with the national interest, Wirach said. He was referring to the summit of the three top courts two weeks ago calling for the four remaining EC members to step aside and pave the way for judicial intervention to restore the credibility of the electoral process. Acting on His Majesty the King's advice last month, the three top courts have been mapping out ways to end the political crisis. An EC member, Jarupat Ruangsuwan, resigned last week, raising the question of a quorum for the remaining three members to continue working. Stepping in to resolve the EC's quorum problem, caretaker Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua asked the Supreme Court to help him fill the two vacant seats. Suchon appeared suddenly keen to solicit the Court's assistance even though he had left another seat unfilled since the death of Jaral Buranapansri in November last year.
