[BADMINTON] Thailand's Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam won the mixed doubles title at the US$120,000 (Bt4.5 million) Philippine Open in Manila yesterday after defeating home favourites Kennevic and Kennie Asuncion in a thrilling final.
The 21-18 21-16 victory over the joint third-seeded brother and sister gave the Thais their first title of the year. However, the tournament was missing many world-class players from China, South Korea, Denmark, Malaysia and Indonesia. Sudket and Saralee burst into prominence by winning the gold medal at the SEA Games in Vietnam three years ago. Last year the world ranked No 12 pair also won the Asian Championships and the Japan Open. They also made it to the semi-finals of the World Championships. The two will soon join other Thai players, including former Thailand Open champion Boonsak Ponsana and his younger sister Salakjit, in Surabaya to contest the $250,000 Indonesia Open. The six-star top-flight tournament will start on Wednesday and finish on June 4, with leading players from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Denmark taking part.
