Business as usual at Govt House

Government House sprang back to life yesterday when the master of the house returned to work after spending the past 47 days "taking a break from politics".
The main Thai Khufa Building, which houses caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's office, was bustling with activity as bureaucrats and politicians took turns reporting the latest developments to the premier. Thaksin appeared to have quickly reverted to his energetic self with a day full of meetings with officials from various agencies. On April 4, two days after a snap election, Thaksin said in a nation-wide address that he would not assume his normal duties until a new government was formed after the polls. He made that statement official in a document submitted to the Cabinet the next day. While Thaksin's No 1 deputy, Chidchai Vanasatidya, assumed his political responsibilities, Thaksin focused on ceremonial duties, such as receiving foreign dignitaries and chairing the organising committee for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne. A food vendor said sales had dropped sharply during Thaksin's absence as many officials left the compound to shop and dine. She said she was confident her business would improve with Thaksin's return.
