Fireworks blast kills six

People pick through debris at the home of firework-maker Somnuk Dangkong after an explosion tore through the property yesterday, killing Somnuk and five of his family.
Six members of an extended family were killed after an explosion at a family-run fireworks factory in Ban Laem district early yesterday.

Four members of the family died at the scene while two died later in hospital. Up to 16 more people were injured, six of them critically.

"I saw a spark shooting out of an electrical socket before the fire caught and quickly spread to piles of fireworks we were going to send to a funeral," said Nittaya Dangkong, 30, who lost her daughter, parents, younger sister and two nephews in the tragedy.

"When I saw the fire had reached the gunpowder inside the fireworks, I ran for my life and shouted a warning to those inside the house ... but it was too late," she said.

The business was well known in the area and had been run by Nittaya's father Somnuk Dangkong for more than two decades.

Police said the explosion damaged more than 15 houses in the area, causing at least Bt5 million in damage.
