EC told to heed top courts' suggestion to resign : Supreme commander

The Election Commission (EC) should heed the advice of the three top courts and step aside so as to give free rein to the judiciary to end the political crisis, Supreme Commander General Ruengroj Masaranont said on Friday.

Ruengroj reiterated the military plea for the EC and relevant parties to follow the courts' recommendations on how to put politicking back on course.

Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratklin and his naval counterpart Admiral Satirapan Keyanon, made similar pleas earlier this week.

"Thais love His Majesty the King and should ask themselves what they can do to make him happy," Ruengroj said, calling for a stop to the fractious state of politics.

In his view, the King would be very happy upon the resumption of peace and harmony under democratic rule, he said.

All relevant individuals involved in the political mess were adults and capable of working out by themselves what should be done, he said.

As military leaders stepped forward to back the judiciary to resolve the political problems, this coincided with a dinner party for the top brass hosted by caretaker Interior Minister Kongsak Wantana on Thursday.

Satirapan said the dinner was private and should not be construed as a political message.

"No one discussed official business at the dinner and everyone tried to update one another on personal affairs," he said.

Kongsak said he had issued his open invitation before he retired from the Air Force service to accept his ministerial post last year.
