Curtain call for ad awards

After 29 years scouring the advertising industry to find the best of the best, the Top Advertising Contest of Thailand (TACT) has held its final awards ceremony.

Tatchawan Kanitpong, chairman of the organising committee of the 29th TACT Awards, said it was time agencies devoted themselves to international competitions. There are now so many contests for ad agencies to compete in, he said, and limited budgets mean they can't join them all.

He added the TACT Awards had become almost a local contest as TACT uses university lecturers to vote for the entries to the competition.

Parames Rajchaiboon, adviser to the Advertising Association of Thailand, said he was sad to see the end of the competition. He said it would become a "legend" in the local advertising industry as over the last 29 years it has helped the industry develop and grow.

Over TACT's 29 years, more than 5,000 advertisements have been sent as entries.

This year saw 358 entries, including television commercials, posters, radio jingles, an Internet ad and a print campaign. There were also several new categories - Best New Media and Ambience Media, Best Point of Purchase, Best Event marketing and Best Marketing Communications.

At its final awards ceremony, TACT looked back over more than 5,000 entries spanning nearly three decades. From these, industry experts selected the 100 Best of the Best in the history of the awards, which were all shown at the event at Dusit Thani Hotel last Monday.

"Restaurant", an ad in the Social Contribution category created by Leo Burnett for Energy Saving, was awarded the ultimate Best of The Best award.

The other top nine ads were Ogilvy & Mather's ad for Singha Beer, Results & Advertising's ad for Black Cat Whiskey, Ogilvy & Mather (Thailand) - Sponsor energy drink, Ogilvy & Mather (Thailand) - Wrangler Jeans, Euro RSCG Flagship - Soken DVD, Betty Ads - Erickson mobile phones, SSC&B Lintas - Senanives housing project, Leo Burnett - Traveling Thailand, Leo Burnett - Telecom Asia, and Ogilvy & Mather - Counter Pain Balm.

Special awards included Best TVC of the Year, Popular Vote TVC, and Best Print Ad of the Year. There were also two categories for Junior TACT Awards.
